A Green Story from Young champions: Thoughtful Earth Day 2026

Photo Credit: Ethically sourced photo while engaging with Grade 7-9 learners It's been a minute since I wrote here, though I am back after an extended break. Last year, I carried out a climate and mental health focused project with 32 learners in Kirinyaga County; Kenya. I discovered that taking care of our environment and our mental health sometimes does not require much resources, it just needs taking action, even if there could be uncertainties when taking initiative for the first time.  Through the Akili Zetu, Mazingira Yetu Project, we turned our afternoons into enjoyable moments through exercises such as eco-gratitude walks around the school, I mean intentionally noticing what was in the biodiversity and appreciating it (I can vividly recall the learners picking the bougain villea flowers and attaching them to their hair, others holding them in their hands, ooh young environmental champions). We even planted local vegetables in sacks (while enlightening them on how the simpl...

Time to honor the many accomplishments and varied contributions of women worldwide as March 8th, International Women's Day, is already here with us. From athletes like Serena Williams, Tegla Loroupe, and Faith Kipyegon to inspiring governance figures like Kamala Harris, Margaret Thatcher and Hillary Clinton; to judicial queens such as Martha Koome and Njoki Ndung'u, women are breaking preconceptions and paving the path for future generations. However, their impact goes well beyond athletics, legal frameworks & politics.

Consider the women who head humanitarian endeavors, like Melinda Gates, or who relentlessly promote education for girls, like Michelle Obama and Malala, or even influential writers such as Nora Roberts, Rebecca Nandwa & Margaret Ogola. For women, globally, their commitment to empowering others is a source of inspiration and hope, including Brianna Walker, a global internship program lead in an esteemed organization who relentlessly mentors newbies in their career voyage. Women who support Menstrual Hygiene Management initiatives, like Janet Mbugua, are also making great progress in shattering taboos and guaranteeing that women and girls have access to necessary resources.

Names like Oprah Winfrey, Lupita Nyong'o, Angelina Jolie, Zendaya, Genevieve Nnaji, Taylor Swift, and Lynn Ngugi stand out as advocates for diversity and transformation in the media and artistic community. By means of their imaginative and narrative skills, they subvert conventional standards and motivate countless individuals to strive towards a fairer future. Significant women who have been saving lives, the likes of Dr. Catherine Nyongesa and Girl in Geo- Laura Mugeha have indeed set the bar high for other aspiring women.

However, let's not undervalue the unsung heroes among us: the women who toil away on farms to support their children, work in the blue-collar industries, or are single mothers who manage to balance many responsibilities with grace and resiliency. We have the utmost regard and admiration for their tenacity and fortitude. Additionally, the inclusivity of women with multifaceted sexual orientations such as Caster Semenya; a prominent South African middle-distance runner ought to be taken into account as these are persons who have battled prejudices, with a population of them being reliable persons.

In addition to honoring these remarkable women's accomplishments, let's reaffirm our commitment to gender equality, women's rights, and universal liberty as we celebrate International Women's Day. Because we improve society as a whole when we empower women. Come celebrate with us the diversity, tenacity, and unshakeable spirit of women everywhere. Happy International Women's Day.
